Keypad and Remote Programming
Remotes and keypads pair to the opener rather than being matched at manufacture, which means they can be added, replaced and cleared as needed.
Rolling code security
Modern openers use rolling code technology. The code transmitted changes on every use according to a sequence shared between remote and receiver. This prevents a captured transmission from being replayed later. Fixed code systems, found on older units, transmit the same code every time and are straightforward to capture.
If an opener uses DIP switches to set the code, it is a fixed code system. On a unit of that age, replacement is usually the better security decision than adding remotes to it.
Pairing a remote
The learn button on the motor unit is pressed, placing the receiver into a brief learning state indicated by an LED. A button on the remote is then pressed, sometimes twice depending on manufacturer. The unit confirms with a click or a light. The window is short, typically around thirty seconds.
Pairing a keypad
A keypad is paired similarly, with a chosen PIN entered during the learn window. Keypads are exposed to weather and to physical access from outside, so PIN selection matters. Sequential digits and dates associated with the household are the common weak choices.
Clearing existing remotes
Holding the learn button until the LED extinguishes, usually around six seconds, erases every paired device. All remotes and keypads then require re pairing.
This is worth doing after buying a property, after a vehicle with a built in transmitter has been sold, or after a remote has been lost. A remote in a stolen vehicle paired to a door whose address is on the registration is a genuine exposure.
Vehicle integrated transmitters
Built in vehicle systems learn from an existing remote rather than from the opener directly in many cases, and some require a repeater for rolling code compatibility. Where the vehicle system will not retain the code, the repeater is usually the missing element.
Range problems
Reduced range is commonly a weak remote battery. Where batteries are new, interference from LED lighting in the garage is a frequent cause, since some LED drivers emit across the frequencies these systems use. Antenna position on the motor unit also matters and is often left tucked up rather than hanging free.
