Torsion spring replacement is the defining repair of this trade. It is also the one with the least tolerance for improvisation, because a wound torsion spring stores a substantial amount of energy.

Why springs are specified, not guessed
A torsion spring is defined by wire diameter, inside diameter, length and wind direction. Together these determine how much lift the spring provides and how many cycles it will survive. The correct specification follows from the measured weight and the drum size, not from what was previously fitted, because the previous spring may itself have been wrong.
Cycle rating is a purchasing decision
A cycle is one full open and close. Standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles. Higher rated springs use thicker wire and a longer body to achieve the same lift with less stress per cycle. A household opening the door four times a day reaches 10,000 cycles in roughly seven years. Choosing a higher rating is usually a modest price difference for a substantially longer service life.
The replacement sequence
Existing tension is wound down under control using proper winding bars, never screwdrivers or improvised tools. The door is secured so it cannot move. Set screws are released, the old spring is removed from the shaft, and the new spring is fitted with the correct wind direction. Cables are re seated on the drums and tensioned evenly. The new spring is wound to the calculated number of turns.
Balance verification
Winding is completed against a balance test rather than a turn count alone. The door is lifted by hand and should hold at mid height. Adjustment is made in quarter turns until it does. A door that passes a turn count but fails a balance test is not finished.
Replacing in pairs
On a two spring door, both springs are replaced together even when only one has failed. They have accumulated identical cycles, so the surviving spring is near the end of its life. Replacing one produces uneven load and a second call within months.
Why this is not a homeowner repair
The energy stored in a wound torsion spring is released instantly if control is lost. Winding bars are specified for this reason and there is no adequate substitute. This is the clearest boundary between maintenance a homeowner can perform and work that requires a technician.
