How a Garage Door Repair Visit Works

A garage door repair visit follows a sequence that has more in common with diagnostics than with general handyman work. The door is a counterbalanced mechanical system, and testing it out of order produces wrong answers.

Disconnect before diagnosing
The opener is separated from the door first, using the emergency release. Everything that follows is about the door itself. This ordering exists because opener symptoms and door symptoms overlap almost completely, and the only reliable way to tell them apart is to remove the opener from the equation.
The balance test
The door is lifted by hand to roughly waist height and released. A correctly counterbalanced door holds position within a few inches. Drift downward indicates lost spring tension. Rising indicates excess tension. Refusing to lift indicates a failed spring or a mechanical bind.
Balance is the single most informative measurement on a garage door, because a door that is out of balance loads every other component abnormally. Opener gear wear, cable fraying, roller failure and hinge cracking are all frequently downstream of a balance problem that was never corrected.
Component inspection
With balance established, components are inspected in load order: springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, track, then opener. Load order matters because a failure upstream produces symptoms downstream. A seized roller will produce track marks, hinge stress and opener strain, and replacing the opener would address none of it.
Measurement rather than estimation
Door weight is measured rather than assumed, because spring selection depends on it. Two doors of identical dimensions can differ substantially in weight depending on insulation, glazing and material. Springs sized from a guess are the most common cause of a door that is out of balance immediately after a repair.
Reassembly and verification
The door is reconnected, cycled repeatedly under power, and tested for auto reverse against an obstruction. Travel limits and force settings are confirmed rather than adjusted to compensate. A visit that ends without these verifications has changed a part but has not confirmed a repair.
Documentation
The homeowner should be told the measured door weight, the cycle rating of any spring installed, and the condition of components that were inspected but not replaced. That last item is what makes the next visit cheaper, because it converts an emergency into a scheduled replacement.
