Roller and Hinge Replacement
Rollers and hinges are inexpensive components whose condition disproportionately affects how the whole door behaves. They are also the components most often replaced without addressing why they failed.
Roller types
Steel rollers with exposed bearings are the common builder specification. They are durable in dry conditions and prone to seizing where humidity or salt is present. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run quieter, do not rust, and tolerate coastal conditions substantially better. The sealed bearing is the meaningful difference rather than the wheel material itself.
Assessing rollers
Each roller is spun by hand with the door stationary. A serviceable roller turns freely and quietly. Indications for replacement include a roller that will not spin, flat spots on the wheel, visible play in the stem, or rust within the bearing race.
A dragging roller does not simply fail in place. It loads the track laterally, transfers stress to the hinge holding it, and increases the effort the opener must supply. One seized roller can produce noise, track wear and opener strain that all appear to be separate problems.
Hinges and what elongated holes mean
Hinges join the door sections and carry the rollers at the section edges. They are inspected for cracking at the knuckle, for corrosion, and for elongated fastener holes.
Elongated holes are the significant finding. They indicate the hinge has been moving relative to the panel under load, which means the door has been carrying stress it was not designed for, usually from a binding condition or a balance problem. Replacing the hinge without correcting the underlying cause returns the same failure, often with panel damage added.
Panel damage at hinge points
Where hinge fasteners have pulled through the panel skin, the panel itself is compromised. Reinforcement plates can address this in some cases. Where the section is cracked through, section replacement is the durable answer.
Replacement approach
Rollers are usually replaced as a complete set rather than individually, because they have accumulated the same cycles. The door is secured and the opener disconnected before any roller is removed, since removing a roller from a door under spring tension can allow the section to move unexpectedly.
