Replacing a Single Garage Door Panel
Damage to one section of a sectional garage door raises a question with a genuinely variable answer. Sometimes replacing the section is straightforward and economical. Sometimes it is a poor decision that costs more over time than replacing the door.
When section replacement works well
It works when the door is relatively recent, the model is still manufactured, the remaining sections are in good condition, and the damage is confined to one section. Vehicle contact with the bottom section on an otherwise sound door is the archetypal case.
The matching problem
Two obstacles recur. Manufacturers discontinue models, and a door more than roughly a decade old may have no available matching section. Even where the section is available, weathering means a new section rarely matches the colour of the existing ones. On a door facing direct sun the difference can be pronounced.
The weight consideration
Replacing a section with one of different construction changes the weight of the door. Since spring specification follows door weight, a heavier or lighter replacement section puts the door out of balance. The balance test is performed after section replacement and spring adjustment made where needed. This step is frequently omitted, which is why doors are often out of balance after a panel repair.
Assessing the rest of the door
Damage severe enough to require a section replacement often affected more than the section. Track is inspected for bows, rollers for flat spots, hinges for elongation, and the opening for square. A section fitted into a distorted opening will bind.
When full replacement is the better call
- The section is unavailable or matching is not achievable
- Multiple sections are damaged
- The door is near the end of its service life anyway
- Cumulative cost of the section, labour and consequent spring work approaches replacement cost
- The existing door is uninsulated and the household would benefit from an insulated door
Structural reinforcement
Where the top section carries the opener bracket, that section takes concentrated load. Damage there is treated more conservatively than damage lower on the door, because failure at the bracket point releases the door from the opener under load.
