Limit Switch and Travel Adjustment

Travel limits tell the opener where the door should stop in each direction. They are simple to set and produce confusing symptoms when wrong, because incorrect limits imitate faults elsewhere in the system.

What the limits control

The down limit defines the fully closed position. The up limit defines fully open. Older units use mechanical screw driven switches on the motor housing. Newer units learn positions electronically during a setup routine.

Symptoms of an incorrect down limit

Set too far, the opener continues driving after the door has met the floor. The system reads the resistance as an obstruction and reverses, so the door opens again immediately after closing. This is routinely misdiagnosed as a safety sensor fault, because the visible behaviour is identical.

Set too short, the door stops above the floor leaving a gap at the bottom seal. In a coastal environment this matters more than it sounds, because it admits humid salt laden air directly to the hardware.

Symptoms of an incorrect up limit

Set too far, the door is driven past its intended open position, stressing the top section and potentially contacting the rear of the horizontal track. Set too short, the door stops low enough to interfere with vehicle clearance, which is a common complaint after an opener replacement.

Interaction with force settings

Travel and force interact. A door stopping short and reversing may be a travel limit problem or a force problem, and the two are distinguished by whether the reversal happens at a consistent position. A consistent reversal point indicates travel. A variable one indicates force or a mechanical bind.

The prerequisite

Limits are set on a door that is already balanced and moving freely. Setting limits on a binding door produces values that compensate for the bind, so the settings become wrong the moment the mechanical issue is corrected.

After adjustment

Auto reverse is retested against a solid object on the floor after any travel adjustment. Changing where the door stops changes the conditions under which obstruction detection operates.
